Your Questions Answered
What do I need to prepare before installing a hot tub?
When thinking about getting a hot tub, there are really only 3 key things to consider: a solid, level base to install it on, an electricity point to provide the power, and a decent hose pipe to fill it up with. That’s about it! There may be some additional work to do if you plan to sink the hot tub, things like access to the maintenance panel for servicing, and space around the tub for electrical installation. Your hot tub supplier will give you all the information you need.
How long does it take for a hot tub to get hot?
The time it takes for a hot tub to get up to speed varies depending on the size of the heater, the size of the tub, and seasonal outside temperature variations from summer to winter. An average 300 gallon (1360 litre) hot tub with a 1.5kW heater should take around 20 hours to get hot in summer. Bigger tubs, different heaters and winter water temperatures will all have different heating times. Also, hot tubs are designed to be hot 24/7. Once your spa is hot, you are only ever topping up lost heat. This is the most efficient way to run a hot tub.
How much does it cost to run a hot tub?
Hot tub running costs vary depending on size, build quality and what type of thermal cover you choose. Hot tubs higher up the budget ladder feature more efficient pumps, better insulation and improved heating technology, making them cheaper to operate in the long run. Most heat escapes from the top so a good quality thermal cover will save you loads of money. Hot tubs are designed to be kept hot 24/7. To give an example, a typical 300 gallon hot tub used 30 minutes per day, every day, with an average electricity price of 15p per kW, will cost around £260 a year to run. Larger hot tubs and longer use periods, in colder climates like Scotland, and with higher energy costs, will cost more.
How long does it take to fill a hot tub?
The best way to fill your hot tub is with a decent hose pipe. The time it takes to fill your tub depends on its size, the size of your hose and water pressure. If you live in the UK, have reasonable water pressure, and are using a standard ¾ inch UK hose to fill a 300 gallon hot tub, this would usually take between 1.5 and 2 hours approximately.
Will my hot tub require much maintenance?
A good quality hot tub will require minimal maintnenance but there are a few things you will have to do on a regular basis to keep it running in tip top condition and to ensure your water quality remains at its best. Depending on the type of your hot tub sanitiser system, you will need to regularly add a chemical sanitiser to the water to keep it clean - don’t forget to do this every 10-14 days to avoid water issues! Clean your filter every 2 weeks to prolong the life of your filter and maintain perfect water clarity - an easy process, just soak the dirty filter in a bucket of cold water with a sachet of filter cleaner for 24 hours, it is advisable to have a spare filter so you can keep your tub running in the meantime. For a hot tub that gets regular use, it is recommended that you fully drain and refill the tub every 4 months. Many hot tubs have bottom drains which you connect to a hose pipe and run to a drain. However if you have not got a bottom drain then this is not a big problem as you can purchase a submersible pump and roll flat hose and can drain the spa that way just as easily.
